Teams that clear the ball at 90% or better in the regular season convert that efficiency in tournament play at a dramatically higher rate than their counterparts. The reason is simple: in a tournament game, every failed clear is a potential momentum swing, and momentum in a one-and-done format is catastrophic. A mediocre team can survive a bad clearing stretch over a ten-game conference schedule. They cannot survive it against a top-four seed with everything on the line.

Look at the last decade of NCAA tournament champions and you’ll find a consistent pattern — nearly all of them ranked in the top ten nationally in clearing percentage heading into the tournament. It’s not a coincidence. Programs like Maryland, Virginia, and Cornell have built tournament pedigrees partly because their coaches treat clearing as a skill worth drilling obsessively, not an afterthought that takes care of itself.

The floor you’re looking for: 88% or above. Teams below that number have a statistical cliff to climb the moment they face elite defensive pressure.

Man-Up Efficiency: Where Good Teams Separate from Great Ones

The man-up/man-down battle is where tournament games are decided more often than any other single factor. Regular season opponents vary wildly in the quality of their man-down defense. Tournament opponents do not. By the quarterfinals, you’re facing units that have specifically prepared to kill your best man-up sets.

The threshold that matters: 30% conversion on the man-up. Teams above that number in tournament play advance at a rate that should make every coach rethink how much practice time they’re dedicating to special teams.

But here’s the flip side that almost no one talks about — man-down efficiency matters just as much. A team that converts 35% on the man-up but gives up 40% when they’re down a man is breaking even at best. The teams built for tournament runs are the ones that are dangerous on the man-up AND disciplined enough not to get killed when they take penalties. Penalty discipline itself is a predictor: teams averaging under 8 penalties per game in the regular season historically outperform their seeds in the tournament.

Save Percentage: The Number That Actually Reflects Goalie Value

Goals-against average gets cited constantly. It’s mostly useless as a tournament predictor because it conflates goalie performance with defense quality. A goalie playing behind a suffocating defensive unit can post a 7.0 GAA and look like a star. Put him behind a leaky defense in a tournament game where the opposing offense is operating at 80% efficiency and you’ll find out what he’s actually made of.

Save percentage cuts through that noise. It measures what the goalie actually does with the shots he faces — and in tournament lacrosse, where shot quality from elite offenses is significantly higher than what most teams see in conference play, a goalie’s real save percentage is the number that holds or crumbles.

The benchmark: .500 save percentage is the absolute floor for a team with tournament aspirations. Elite tournament goalies — the ones whose teams are still playing in mid-May — consistently post .520 or above. The jump from .490 to .520 sounds small. In a game where a team might face 35 shots, that’s roughly one extra save. In a one-goal tournament game, that save is the season.

Recruiters and coaches have started to understand this. The transfer portal has increasingly moved starting-caliber goalies between programs specifically because teams understand that save percentage is the single most replaceable-via-transfer tournament variable. You can’t fix your clearing percentage in January. You might be able to upgrade your goalie.

The Composite Picture

No single stat predicts tournament success in isolation — a team can clear brilliantly and still lose if their goalie is getting shelled. But when you stack all three metrics, a pattern emerges that’s hard to argue with.

Teams that rank in the top fifteen nationally in clearing percentage, convert man-up opportunities at 30%+, and have a goalie posting .510 or better advance past the quarterfinals at a rate that far outpaces their seeding. Programs that are average or below in all three categories almost never make a deep run, regardless of how many stars their roster carries on paper.
