You watched the game. Your team lost 11-8 and you’re trying to figure out what went wrong. You pull up the box score and stare at a column of numbers that tells you approximately nothing useful. Goals, assists, shots, ground balls, faceoffs — it’s all there, but if you don’t know how to read it, you’re just looking at a receipt, not an explanation.

Here’s how to actually use a lacrosse box score to understand what happened on the field.

The Basics: What the Box Score Shows You

A standard lacrosse box score gives you: goals, assists, shots, shots on goal, ground balls, turnovers, caused turnovers, and faceoff splits. For goalies, you get saves and goals allowed. That’s your raw material. The mistake most fans make is treating any single number as a verdict. None of them are — they’re evidence.

Shots vs. Shots on Goal: The First Real Signal

Total shots is nearly useless without context. Shots on goal — attempts that actually forced the goalie to make a save or went in — is where you start learning something. A guy who takes 12 shots with 5 on cage is not having a good game offensively, no matter what his highlight reel looks like. He’s chucking low-percentage attempts and missing the frame.

At the D1 and PLL level, a strong offensive player posts a shots-on-goal rate above 50 percent. Below 40 percent and you’re dealing with volume shooting that flatters the stat line. When a team gets outshot 30-18 but wins, check the on-cage numbers first — the losing team was probably taking bad shots from bad angles.

Save Percentage: The Goalie Metric That Actually Matters

Raw saves is for people who don’t watch lacrosse. Save percentage — saves divided by shots on goal — is the only goalie stat worth citing in an argument. A D1 starting goalie who posts below .480 in a loss either faced a historically efficient offense or had a rough night. Elite goalies at the PLL level hover around .500 to .520 over a season. Save percentage above .560 in a single game usually means the offense in front of him was leaving him exposed and he bailed them out.

Context matters: 8 saves on 10 shots on goal is a very different performance than 8 saves on 15 shots on goal.

Faceoffs: The Hidden Game Within the Game

Faceoff win percentage is one of the most consequential stats in the box score and one of the least discussed. Possession starts at the faceoff X, and a team that wins 65 percent of faceoffs is running a possession advantage that compounds over four quarters. The stat to watch is faceoffs won out of total taken — anything above 60 percent is a dominant performance. Below 40 percent and your offense had to earn every possession the hard way.

When a team with better talent loses, check the faceoff line before you reach any other conclusion. Faceoff specialists don’t make highlight reels but they dictate field position all game long.

Ground Balls: Effort in Numerical Form

Ground balls reflect hustle, positioning, and physicality. A team that gets outworked on ground balls by more than 10 over a full game is typically going to lose. This is one stat that holds up as a real-time indicator of which team wanted it more in the loose-ball battles. At the D1 level, midfielders with high ground ball totals (6 or more in a game) are controlling the engine of the offense even when their scoring line looks empty.

Turnovers and Caused Turnovers: The Efficiency Killers

Turnovers in lacrosse include unforced errors — bad passes, dropped catches, illegal touches — and caused turnovers, which credit a defender for forcing the turnover. The gap between these two matters. A team with 15 turnovers and only 4 caused turnovers against them was beating itself. A team with 15 turnovers and 11 caused turnovers was facing real defensive pressure that disrupted their offense.

High turnover totals on both sides usually mean a sloppy, physical game. When one team has significantly fewer turnovers, that’s often your clearest indicator of which program played smarter.

What the Box Score Won’t Tell You

Shot quality, defensive positioning, transition opportunities created versus cashed, and goalie screening. The box score tells you outcomes. It doesn’t tell you how easy or hard those outcomes were to create. A player who runs three dodges from behind the cage, draws a slide, and fires a skip pass to a shooter in space for an easy finish? His box score line is one assist. The guy who buries a bounce shot from 15 yards on a broken possession after a ground ball scramble? One goal.

Same numbers. Completely different contributions.

The Numbers That Don’t Lie

If you want the three stats that most accurately reflect performance and are least susceptible to narrative distortion, here they are: shots on goal percentage, faceoff win rate, and turnover differential. A team that dominates all three of those categories is going to win the vast majority of its games. When they don’t, that’s when you start digging into what the box score can’t show you.

Read the numbers. Question what they don’t say. That’s how you actually know what happened.
