We’re past the scheduling cupcakes, past the early-season excuse window, and into the games that will define the at-large bubble and seed lines in May. The rankings have moved. Some of that movement reflects genuine performance gaps that have opened up; some of it is teams catching their moment. Here’s where we stand.
D1 Mens Lacrosse Power Rankings Week 7: Full List
1. Virginia Cavaliers
Virginia moves to the top spot after the most impressive stretch of the season from any program. They’ve been beating teams the way top programs should: decisively, with margin, not surviving. Their defensive scheme continues to be the best in the country. Meanwhile, their offense has found a consistency it lacked in the first month. When Virginia is playing like this, they’re the hardest team in the country to score on, and that wins championships.
2. Maryland Terrapins
Maryland drops to two but this is not a crisis — it’s two very good programs being separated by extremely fine margins. The Terps remain elite in transition and their midfield depth is as good as anyone’s. The reason they’re not at one is that Virginia has been more consistent over the past three weeks. If those teams meet in the ACC tournament, flip a coin.
3. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame’s rise to three is the best story in the rankings right now. The mental toughness development we noted earlier in the season has continued — they’re now winning the close games that defined them as a good-but-not-great team last year. Their goalie is playing at an All-American level. Conference play will test them in ways the non-conference schedule didn’t. As a result, we’ll learn a lot more about this team in the next three weeks.
4. Syracuse Orange
Syracuse jumps into four after running through a difficult stretch of their schedule. Their zone continues to cause problems for offenses that didn’t dedicate enough practice time to preparing for it. In addition, their transition attack remains one of the most explosive in the country. The Orange are a matchup nightmare in a tournament setting.
5. Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn State at five is the most reliable ranking in this list. They’re not going to blow anyone’s doors off, and they’re not going to suffer a stunning upset. They will continue to accumulate wins through discipline and execution. Their ranking five weeks from now will be within one or two spots of where it is today. That’s not a criticism — that’s a program that knows what it is.
6. Johns Hopkins Blue Jays
Hopkins climbs back into the top ten after showing significant improvement in their midfield cohesion. The early-season chemistry concerns are not fully resolved but they’re improving week over week. If their midfield unit can play to its talent level by the time the tournament bracket drops, Hopkins is dangerous. The staff identified the problem early enough to fix it.
7. Duke Blue Devils
Duke drops three spots and they’ve earned the drop. The defensive scheme problem we identified earlier in the season has not been resolved, and teams are continuing to exploit it. Their offensive talent keeps them competitive, but they’re giving up too many goals to be considered a championship-level program right now. Something needs to change schematically on the defensive end.
8. Denver Pioneers
Denver climbs to eight on the back of a grind-it-out win over a program that had been beating them historically. The Pioneers’ toughness is real — they don’t quit, they don’t panic, and they don’t change what they do based on who they’re playing. That consistency has real value.
9. Cornell Big Red
Cornell remains the Ivy’s representative in the top ten and their offense has been clicking in recent weeks. The scheduling context matters here — their results against ACC and B1G competition will define whether they get a favorable tournament seed — but they’re doing everything they can control correctly.
10. Princeton Tigers
Princeton edges back in after a strong week, earning their spot through disciplined offensive execution and a strong defensive performance. The young players in key roles showed significant improvement in handling pressure situations.
Falling Out: Yale
Yale exits the top ten after the defensive vulnerability we flagged earlier became decisive against a quality opponent. The talent is still there and a return is absolutely possible if they make adjustments. But they can’t wait much longer.
Climbing: Loyola, Ohio State
Loyola is doing something interesting — they’ve rebuilt their ride game from scratch midseason, which is unusual and speaks well of their coaching staff’s adaptability. Ohio State is showing signs of the mental toughness improvement they desperately needed. Neither is in the top ten yet but both are worth watching.
