The Verdict Up Front
The STX Cell III arm guards are the best mid-range defensive arm protection on the market right now. Serious coverage, real elbow padding, and they don’t turn into a sauna under long sleeves — buy them.
Who This Is For
Defensemen and LSMs at the high school varsity through collegiate level who want legitimate protection without paying flagship prices. Midfielders who spend time in traffic will appreciate these too. At around $45–$60, the Cell III slots into the serious-player-on-a-budget category. It’s not a beginner’s first purchase, but it’s not a reason to take out a loan either. If you’re a youth player getting your first set of arm guards, look at something cheaper. If you’re suiting up for varsity or above, this is the move.
What the STX Cell III Arm Guards Get Right
Protection coverage is legitimate. The Cell III covers from mid-forearm to just above the elbow with hard plastic caps backed by foam that actually absorbs impact. STX didn’t cheap out on the forearm shell. The coverage area is wide enough that an off-angle slash doesn’t find an unprotected gap. That matters in tight defense situations where you don’t always take a check cleanly.
The elbow padding is the standout feature. Hard cup over a multi-density foam layer. When you go down on turf or take a direct hit on the elbow, the Cell III absorbs it properly. Plenty of arm guards in this price range offer a soft foam elbow cap that compresses to nothing on contact. This isn’t that. STX built in a hard outer shell that stays between your elbow and whatever’s coming at it.
Fit under long sleeves is better than expected. The profile is slim enough to layer under a compression sleeve without bunching or riding up. The straps hold position without cutting circulation. After a full game of physical play, they’re not sliding around your arm — a basic requirement that more products fail than you’d think.
Strap system is clean. Two straps, both with actual velcro grip, sized to fit a range of arm builds. No fidgeting during warmups to get them to sit right.
What Doesn’t
The bicep coverage is minimal. The Cell III ends just above the elbow cup. If you want protection up into the bicep area, this isn’t your guard — STX makes the Cell V and Cell VI for that. For players who’ve taken high checks that find the bicep gap, this will leave the same window open.
Ventilation is average at best. The foam backing traps heat. On a July summer league game or a hot afternoon tournament, these will be warm. Not unwearable, but don’t expect the Cell III to keep you cool. The hard plastic coverage limits airflow — that’s a tradeoff you’re making for the protection.
Color options are limited. You get a few base colors. If your program is particular about gear matching, the Cell III may not cooperate with niche uniform combinations. Not a functional issue, but worth noting.
Price vs. Value
At $45–$60, the STX Cell III arm guards are priced right for what they deliver. You’re getting hard-shell elbow protection, solid forearm coverage, and a fit that works under game conditions. The upper-tier STX arm guards run $80–$100+ and add bicep coverage and better ventilation — spend the extra money if that matters to you. But if your priority is reliable elbow and forearm protection at a fair price, the Cell III gets the job done without cutting corners where it counts. The value case is strong.
Bottom Line
The STX Cell III arm guards do exactly what defensive players need: protect the elbow properly, cover the forearm, and stay in place during physical play. The limited bicep coverage is a real gap, and anyone who wants full arm protection should look at the Cell V or VI. But for the high school to collegiate defenseman who wants proven, affordable arm guards that hold up under game-speed contact, the Cell III is the answer. It earned its reputation as the defensive standard for a reason.
